Drawing Requirements Manual
This section lists various Government and approved Non-Government documents used in the preparation of engineering drawings. Documents listed herein are applicable only as specified in the contract or DRAWING REQUIREMENTS MANUAL (DRM) sections.
This section establishes the essential requirements for the preparation and revisions of engineering drawings, requirements for drawing disclosure, hard copy drafting requirements, digital data files (2D and 3D) and associated lists prepared under the requirements of ASME Y14.100-2004. It is essential that ASME Y14.100 be used in close conjunction with ASME Y14.24, ASME Y14.34M and ASME Y14.35M for establishing the basic requirements for commercial applications. Department of Defense (DoD) needs and requirements often extend beyond commercial applications. To invoke these additional DoD requirements, drawings must be part of a Technical Data Package (TDP) per MIL-DTL-31000. Under the requirements of MIL-DTL-31000, drawings, models, and related documentation are required to adhere to default and selected specifications and standards. TDPs may be classified as Type 2D or Type 3D, and are composed of one or more TDP elements and related TDP Data Management Products. These requirements support all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense’s Defense's policy of acquiring only those engineering drawings and associated lists that are needed.
Note: "Drawing Categories" and "Forms", formerly defined in MIL-D-1000 and drawing "LEVELS" formerly defined in DOD-D-1000B no longer apply.
This section defines various drafting practices such as drawing scale, lettering, line work, sectioning, and projection, and descriptive geometry applicable to making new engineering drawings and their subsequent revisions. Note: Some material from this section has been relocated to Appendix A1 “Past Practices – Manual Drafting Techniques.” The material may still be pertinent for those companies still producing drawings manually and/or having to revise manually-prepared existing drawings, but most of industry has adopted CAD as the preferred medium for generating drawings. Thus, some of this content may be considered as outdated by some readers. To allay this concern we moved the material to the aforementioned Appendix. Some content that is mostly pertinent to manual drawing preparation has been retained in this SECTION as it also applies to CAD-generated drawings.
This section defines and illustrates the types of engineering drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.24, normally prepared for end product definition. Sample drawings are shown in Metric or Decimal Inch dimensions as determined by individual contract.
This section establishes and illustrates the methods of specifying dimensions and tolerances on drawings.
This section establishes the standard format for engineering drawings. By limiting a selected number of standard sizes and by including a uniform planned format, the following will be achieved:
- Prevention of an inventory of excessive sizes.
- Improved readability, because like information is placed in the same location on all drawings.
- Increased productivity in making reproductions.
- Improved and reduced filing procedures.
This section establishes the numbering system for the identification of engineering drawings, parts, associated lists and documents referenced thereon.
This section describes the approved method for developing Drawing Titles. Section 5 of ASME Y14.100 addresses content and format of titles used on engineering drawings. Only drawing titles shall be in the title block except for security classification symbol in accordance with PARAGRAPH 18.104.22.168 in SECTION 6. Approved items listed in the H6 database are preferred for use in drawing titles for defense-related drawings. Item names not listed in the H6 database should be submitted, through the Government design or procuring activity, to the Defense Logistic Services Center (DLSC) for approval.
This section explains the standard types, composition, and use of drawing notes.
This section establishes the requirements and procedures to be observed in the preparation of a parts list integral with or separate from the drawing. Lists may be prepared manually or from digital data.
This section establishes the engineering drawing requirements for specifying the marking of part identification, serialization and other information on hardware per ASME Y14.100 and as applicable Appendix B.
This section establishes the method of representing and specifying threads on engineering drawings for both inch and metric thread specifications. Straight unified inch “UN”, “UNR”, “UNJ”, form and metric “M”, “MJ” form screw threads are emphasized in this SECTION in consideration of their wide use and general purpose applications. The same drafting practices apply to straight and taper pipe threads, Acme, Stub Acme, Buttress, Helical coil insert and interference fit threads except for differences noted.
This section establishes the method of specifying geometric characteristics of surface irregularities with respect to their height, width, and direction. It provides, through the use of symbols and numerical value classifications, a uniform system for accurately expressing the desired surface requirements (roughness, waviness, contact area, and lay) of solid materials on drawings. Surfaces normally excluded from these requirements are those which are controlled by their manufacturing process and are usually acceptable for most applications, i.e., textile, rubber, optical glass, plastics, felt, sheet metal, tubing, etc.
This section delineates the application of the approved welding symbols for use on drawings.
This section establishes the methods for specifying protective coating requirements.
This section establishes the procedures to be followed in the preparation of casting drawings. Data on design practices is incidental to subject presentation and is intended only as a guide.
This section establishes the procedures to be followed in the preparation of forging drawings. Data on design practices is incidental to subject presentation and is intended only as a guide.
This Section provides a standard for the preparation and interpretation of Facility Drawings. It applies to drawing types, format and procedure normally associated with the architectural and construction industry.
This Tooling Drawing section provides standardized regulations for the preparation and interpretation of Company tooling drawings. This section is concerned primarily with format and procedures peculiar to tooling drawings.
This Packaging Design Drafting Procedures Section provides a standard for the preparation and interpretation of Company packaging drawings. This section is concerned with drawing format and procedure peculiar to packaging drawings. Packaging Drawing Procedures are normally the same as those of engineering drawings. Drawing procedures not covered here may be found in other sections of this Manual.
This section establishes drafting and dimensioning practices pertinent to the preparation of drawings for parts to be fabricated from sheet metal. Additional information is presented to assist the draftsman in establishing proper dimensions for certain features of formed sheet metal parts.
This section establishes standard methods for preparing electrical and electronic drawings.
This section establishes the methods of revising engineering drawings. These procedures apply only to drawings that have been released.
This section contains the requirements for and a list of abbreviations used on drawings.
ACRONYMS USED IN THIS DRM AND ELSEWHERE IN GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY CONTRACTS
This section establishes the rules and practices related to preparing, annotating, revising, and using 3D solid model data sets and axonometric drawing views as deliverables in accordance with ASME Y14.41-2003 “Digital Product Definition Data Practices” and MIL-DTL-31000C. Some material in this section was developed specifically for the DRM. ASME Y14.41-2003 builds upon other ASME Y14 series standards, in some cases creating additional requirements, and in other cases taking exception with the other standards.
The scope of this SECTION is to present the information required by a draftsman or engineer to enable him to create a metric drawing, or to convert an existing inch drawing to a metric drawing.
This SECTION portrays the methods of converting the quantities of various systems of American measurement to the International System of Units (SI) and from the SI units to American units.
This section establishes the general rules for writing SI units on drawings and in text form.
This SECTION establishes the method of converting an existing INCH drawing to a METRIC drawing by the use of dual dimensioning. Using dual dimensions on drawings is discouraged. However, when used or encountered, the methods, options and preferences are presented herein.
This section establishes dimensional paper sizes used in the preparation of ISO metric (hard) drawings. “Hard” being interpreted as being prepared using ISO metric dimensions from the beginning and without consideration given to conversion.
The purpose of this Appendix is as a repository for material from the body of the DRM (SECTIONS 1-25) that has been determined to be strictly related to past practices. In general, past practices in this context refer to techniques, rules and applications that predate the use of computers. For example, all material that explicitly pertains to manual drafting techniques has been moved to this Appendix.
